Pup play is associated with leather culture. A man acts out canine mannerisms and behaviors, or simply imagines such behaviors or identities, and attempts to assume the mental state of a dog. Pup-play does not require any involvement with bestiality. The dominant role is taken by a "Handler," "Trainer," or a "Master." The submissive may be called a "pup," a "dog," a "stray," or in the case of a more aggressive or dominant participant that still identifies as a dog, an "alpha." In the pup-play community, biological canines are referred to as "canines," to differentiate between them and human role players (the pup, dog, or alpha). Pup play is more about being a playful, goofy being on all fours who shows his/her Master their love and devotion. Instinct also plays a big role in pup play.
As I have said before, pups at leather events tended to irritate me. It had nothing to do with the fetish and more to do with the manipulation of common space. As with all fetishes, there are a mutlitude of accessories that a person can buy to enter this fetish. I have to say that I am sort of a minamalist. If a person needs the equipment to get into the headspace; more power to them. I have just had my most profound moments in pup play with a guy sitting at my knee as I sctrached his head and ears.
I have to say that puppy play does enter into my obedience to Master. He does not call me a pup. I have found that after a painful session with Master it is very hard for me to verbalize. I act very much like people act who are into puppy play. I rub my head on his leg. I curl around his legs and sleep. He will very often reach down and scratch my head. When he identifies me to others, he calls me his alpha slave. I guess purists will say that it is not puppy play because I am not conciously imitating a pup. In my opinion, the pups that I love and care for are those that are who they are; they are not playing a role. They are just happy with life.
